Mombian.com has an excellent article analyzing the effects of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy on the children of service members.

In the close-knit community of an army base, there is a strong chance the young children will inadvertently out their mothers. “When I tried to put William in on-base daycare,” explains Parker, “he would talk about having two moms. A lot of the daycare workers are spouses of military personnel. I don’t need somebody’s wife saying ‘What’s the deal with William Parker?’”

Gay Former Ambassador on the Cover of The Advocate

Former ambassador Michael Guest will be featured on the cover of The Advocate’s next issue. Guest retired last month over what he called the State Department’s discriminatory policies. Guest wrote:

“For the past three years, I’ve urged the Secretary and her senior management team to redress policies that discriminate against gay and lesbian employees. Absolutely nothing has resulted from this. And so I’ve felt compelled to choose between obligations to my partner — who is my family — and service to my country. That anyone should have to make that choice is a stain on the Secretary’s leadership and a shame for this institution and our country.”

The forthcoming Advocate hits newsstands on January 15th.
