Like many baby boomers, gay and lesbian retirees are looking for affordable and safe places to live out their autumn years. While many have the financial resources to invest, their options have been limited and many have felt it necessary to return to the closet in order to comfortably integrate with existing retirement communities.

Considering estimates that 400,000 gay men and lesbians in the United States turn 60 every year it’s no surprise communities are finally beginning to be created which market specifically to the gay and lesbian demographic. Out Properties, a subsidiary of Missouri-based Aventurs Development LLC, recently announced plans for Marigold Creek a resort-style retirement community located in Surprise Arizona 30 minutes from Phoenix.

What makes Marigold Creek unique when compared to the numerous other Phoenix area development is the fact that the community will be designed and marketed specifically to the gay community but will be, as they describe it “straight-friendly”. Marigold Creek plans to offer both condominiums and single family homes and feature amenities such as concierge service, spa and an activities director who will plan outings and programs for community residents. Marigold Creek is just one of a number of Gay & Lesbian Retirement Communities announced this year with similar developments planned in Boston, San Francisco and Florida.
